JULY 27 – Tuesday – 8:30 pm
BELLS ARE RINGING
(USA 1960)
“Bells are Ringing” is a nostalgic look at the New York of the 1950s when to have an answering service counted as a major status symbol. Re-creating her Broadway role of flibbertigibbet telephone operator Ella Peterson employed at Susanswerphone, a hole-in-the-wall answering service run by her cousin Sue (Jean Stapleton) this was Judy Holliday’s last screen appearance. (Incidentally, one of Holliday’s “blind dates” is played by her then boyfriend, jazz musician Gerry Mulligan.) The film’s songs, by Betty Comden, Adolph Green & Jule Styne, include the hit numbers “Just in Time” and “The Party’s Over.” Also starring Dean Martin & Eddie Foy, Jr.

Led by Naomi Goldberg Haas, director of New York City-based Dances For A Variable Population, based in lower Manhattan, makes concert dances with diverse communities and professional dancers ranging from children who thought dance was only on MTV, to persons with disabilities who thought dance was denied them, to seniors who thought dance was beyond them. BEATLES SING ALONG
LED BY LINCOLN, SHERI & FRIENDS
YELLOW SUBMARINE – 8:00 pm
(UK 1968)
Once upon a time, the unearthly paradise of Pepperland was taken over by the evil Blue Meanies. All looked hopeless until the Fab Four sailed in to save the day with humor, music &, of course, their yellow submarine. Released during the psychedelic pop culture of the 1960s, Yellow Submarine was a box-office hit, drawing in crowds both for its lush, wildly creative images, & its soundtrack of Beatles songs. The story is a series of set-pieces designed to present Beatles music accompanying various images, reminiscent of Walt Disney’s Fantasia (& foreshadowing the rise of music videos & MTV fifteen years later.) The dialogue is littered with puns, double entendres, & Beatles in-jokes, many scripted by poet Roger McGough.

RUBBERBANDANCE
PS/21 is thrilled to welcome this cutting edge acclaimed dance group to the Tent.
An authentic, serious new voice in dance, Victor Quijada, a native son of L.A., has created an exciting, seemingly improbable fusion of hip-hop, ballet and modern dance. He has taken the energy and virtuosity of street dancing and married it to the formal structures of concert dance, and he's done it with a probing sense of musicality, a respect for the individuality of his dancers and an ability to evoke meaningful character interactions. |

PEAU D'ÂNE/ DONKEY SKIN
(FRANCE 1970)
Directed by Jacques Demy (“Umbrellas of Cherbourg”) with an all-star cast including Catherine Deneuve, Delphine Seyrig, Jean Marais & Micheline Presle. In 2005 Roger Ebert wrote :“told with the simplicity & beauty of a child’s fairy tale, but with emotional undertones & a surrealistic style that adults are more likely to appreciate. A child & a parent seeing this movie would experience two different films....Based on a 17th-century tale by Charles Perrault, it’s one of his original Mother Goose stories, which also include ‘Cinderella’ & ‘Sleeping Beauty.’” Score by Michel Legrand (as in “Umbrellas.”)

CITY THAT DRINKS the MOUNTAIN SKY
Arm of the Sea Theater Company
The epic story of NYC's water supply told in the elemental beauty of Puppet Theater. Heralded as one of the wonders of the world, New York City's ingenious system of aqueducts and reservoirs provides clear mountain water from the Catskills to nine million downstate residents. This show takes us into the very heart of the Catskill watershed. We see how forests are like kidneys, filtering water as it moves towards streams and reservoirs. We meet workers who built the aqueduct and reservoir system. And we come to understand how this giant water project brought profound changes to so many villages and towns in the Hudson Valley. Best for ages 8 through adult |

BLOOD WEDDING
(ARGENTINA 1981)
A bride elopes with her lover on the day of her wedding. The groom follows the two lovers, & a knife fight takes place. Carlos Saura’s film is an adaptation of Federico García Lorca’s play Blood Wedding. As with all Saura’s Flamenco films, it is overtly theatrical: beginning with the company arriving at the studio & putting on costumes & makeup. The dance is then performed in a bare-windowed space with a minimum of props. Starring the great Flamenco dancers Antonio Gades & Laura del Sol.

(USA 1934)
A screwball musical comedy, it was the first to feature Astaire & Rogers as the main attraction. The NYT’s contemporary reviewer wrote,“Both as a romantic comedian and as a lyric dancer, Mr. Astaire is an urbane delight, & Miss Rogers keeps pace with him even in his rhythmic flights over the furniture.” “The Continental” won the first Academy Award for best original song. With the usual comedic suspects: Edward Everett Horton, Erik Rhodes & Eric Blore.
