Directed
by Stanley Donen
Music by Leonard Bernstein, additional songs by Roger Edens.
With Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Betty Garrett, Ann Miller,
Vera-Ellen and Jules Munshin.
The story was inspired by Jerome Robbins’s ballet “Fancy
Free” in which three sailors on 24 hours’ leave
are determined to Änd joy and love in the Big Apple. “On
the Town” set a precedent by taking its actors to New
York City for several days of location shooting at many of
the landmarks that make the city what it is. Even though most
of it was shot in Hollywood, the location footage incorporated
into the body of the Älm gives it a distinct New York Åavor
that just couldn’t be faked. The lyrics (by Betty Comden
and Adolph Green), set to Leonard Bernstein’s music,
have made “On the Town” a permanent part of the
psychological landscape of New York City. 98 minutes. MORE
